Questions & Answers
The things people ask before they call anybody.
These are the questions we get most often about tree service in Richmond, KY, answered the way we would answer them standing in your yard. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.
Before you call anyone
Two things are worth doing first. Photograph the tree from a few angles including the base and the root flare, because half of what we need to know is at ground level. And if a power line is involved anywhere in the picture, call your utility before you call a tree company.
The best time of year for tree work
Removal can be done any time. Structural pruning on most species is best in the dormant season, when the structure is visible and the tree is not pushing growth. A few species prefer other windows, and oaks in particular are best pruned outside the active growing season where oak wilt is a concern.
Storm work happens whenever the storm does.
Common questions about tree service in Richmond
The Tree Care Industry Association publishes safety standards and guidance on choosing a tree care company.
How much does tree removal cost in Richmond, KY?
It depends on what is under the tree, whether equipment can reach it, and the condition of the wood — those three factors matter more than height. Estimates are free and on site. Our cost guide breaks down every factor.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property?
For a tree on private residential property in Madison County, generally no. Trees in a right-of-way, on commercial sites under a development plan, or covered by an HOA agreement can be different. Check locally if you have any doubt.
Who is responsible when a neighbor’s tree falls on my property?
This is a legal question rather than a tree question, and the usual answer turns on whether the tree was visibly hazardous beforehand and whether the owner had been notified. Document the tree’s condition now, in writing, if you are worried about one.
Can I trim branches that hang over my property line?
Generally a property owner may trim to the line, but the tree still belongs to the neighbor and you can be liable for damaging it. Talk to the neighbor first — it is a better outcome than the alternative.
How long does a removal take?
A straightforward yard tree is usually a few hours. A large tree over a house that has to be rigged down in sections can take a full day or more.
Will you damage my lawn?
Heavy equipment on soft ground leaves marks. We use plywood and mats where it matters, choose access routes with that in mind, and tell you honestly in advance if the lawn is going to take some wear.
What do you do with the wood?
Whatever you want. Cut to rounds and left, chipped on site, or hauled away — each is priced differently.
Do you grind the stump too?
Yes, quoted separately. Doing it during the same visit is cheaper than a return trip. See stump grinding.
Is my ash tree worth treating?
If it still has most of its canopy, possibly. If it has lost the top third, generally not. See emerald ash borer.
Do you work in the winter?
Yes, and dormant season is often the best time for structural pruning and for removals where you want the least impact on the lawn.
